type='text'>Big Break Update...

Hello everyone! I apologize for the mass email but I wanted to give a quick update about Big Break 2008. I am also looking for a productive reason to take a break from studying for my Greek exam!

Amy and I are so thankful to all of you for your prayers. We got on the road last Friday planning on stopping halfway between Detroit and Panama City Beach but Ethan and Libby decided they wanted to get to Mama and Papa's without stopping. They were amazing and we made the 18 hour drive in one day stopping only for gas!

Our students arrived the next day safe and sound. Monday and Tuesday Amy was really sick and that threw a bit of a kink in the works but God was glorified in it as our students stepped out and led one another well. Monday evening I was able to speak to the 150 or so students from MI, IL, IN, and OH on Colossians 1:15-20 and the following evening to about 30 men from MI about true manhood.

The week was incredible on the evangelism from too! There were 500 students from all over the country and they initiated over 2500 conversations and saw more than 80 people trust Christ. The students from Central Michigan University (whom I lead from a distance) and the University of Detroit Mercy saw two people trust Christ!

God is so good! Thank you so much for praying! I suppose it's time to go back to Greek...

<SPAN class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: separate; border-spacing: 0px 0px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Georgia; Wow, the last two months have disappeared. Since we returned home from Christmas Conference, where more than forty students from Detroit and Central Michigan University were able to grow deeper in their relationship with Christ, life has been fast paced! Ethan is playing indoor soccer and has had his skill assessment for spring baseball. Libby has started taking gymnastics at our community recreation center. Ministry has been incredibly busy. Almost every weekend has found us engaging with students about Jesus. Seminary is also in full swing as I am taking four classes including my second semester of Greek. There is light at the end of the tunnel! By the end of this semester I will be one third of the way through.

Have you heard of Facebook? It is a social networking website where students from High School through College along with large corporations can connect with one another. This semester we have begun to take advantage of this technology! We have been advertising our evangelistic website, everydetroitstudent.com on Facebook targeting the campuses that we have movements on. It has been great to see the response. Thousands of students have visited our website and over twenty have indicated decisions for Christ. We are trying to follow up with those students where possible.

The other side of this coin is the opportunity to enter into conversation with lost students about Jesus. They are able to email us questions about anything they want. I have been able to dialog with a handful of students who are honestly struggling with what they believe about Jesus. They have many questions and are able to ask them in a way that is non-threatening. I wanted to give you a sample of what one of these students is wrestling with in his own words. I have been able to email back and forth with him over many of these issues.

This is from Neal:

“Have you read Richard Dawkins "The God Illusion"? You should. You should understand that the "truth" is not within the bible but rather when we look at ourselves and the world around us not into a single book which results intellectual inbreeding. Relying in the false hope that your bible preaches to solve problems is a path to generational stagnation. Look at this through a historical perspective. The dark ages for example were ruled by a religious overtone. Now in contrast look at the age of enlightenment and all we have discovered since then. It was only when the grip of the church was released that any real discovery was made in the sciences and true understanding. You can stick with a flat world, a 14,000 year old earth and the boogeyman. I prefer the REAL TRUTH of science and you should too because when your family member is really sick. You can take him or her to a church for a faith healing by a fake who or you can take that person to a hospital where science prevails. What will you choose?”

It is amazing! This is only one example of many students asking real questions! The Christmas season is well on its way. This past weekend we celebrated the second week of Advent at our church’s worship gathering. It was a great reminder of how great our Savior and our God really is. The best part of Christmas is the fact that the glory of Christ is revealed everywhere! The first Saturday in December is Noel Night in Detroit. The culmination of the evening was the Salvation Army Band leading a few thousand people in the singing of traditional Christmas Hymns. Amazing!

At the end of each semester we take time to evaluate and think about what God has done and where we believe God is leading us in the future. This semester is no different. Amy and I praise God for how he is clearly at work in the lives of college students. I think of Jose as he faithfully and passionately leads our movement at the University of Detroit-Mercy. Then I think about Lawrence Technological University and how a leadership team is beginning to slowly catch the heart of what it means to be a movement. Finally, I sit in awe of God’s goodness as he provides for the movement at Central Michigan University with solid laborers who love one another.

A few weeks ago our staff team went to the University of Detroit-Mercy to share our faith. Jose and I wrote our own survey to use while engaging lost students. One of the questions on the survey was “What are the three biggest questions you want answers to right now?” I think the answers will both encourage you and break your heart:

o Why am I here?
o Does God exist?
o Will I die being a loser and a failure?

As I read those questions my heart is broken for these students. We sat and discussed these questions and talked about the answers. The really fun part is that the students came from every walk of life. Sitting around a table in Grounds there were white students, Hispanic students, and African American students. It was incredible. The Lord used this scene to remind me again why we are on staff with Campus Crusade for Christ. God is at work on the college campus.

Amy and I are so grateful for your ongoing and faithful support. Each year that goes by we are humbled by your faith and how the Lord continually uses you to bless us and thousands of college students.

October 2006 Newsletter

The last few weeks have flown by! As I head out to campus every day I am blown away by the creativity of our God. The trees in Southeastern Michigan are in full blown color and it is truly amazing. Each weekend we have been treated to Tiger and University of Michigan victories. The World Series has reached fever pitch here as the Cardinals and Tigers are facing off. Our family loves baseball and now our two favorite teams are battling it out for supremacy. Ethan’s t-ball season is over and he loved playing. Libby informed us that her favorite baseball player is Ethan!

There is so much to share this month but we wanted to do something a little different this time. Amy and I thought you might enjoy hearing from some students and the influence that your partnership with us is making. First, one of our former students, Emily Perkins, has recently moved to East Asia where she is serving as a teacher and sharing the message of Jesus. Here is a portion of the letter that she sent us just after deciding to go overseas.

“Last Thursday I was offered a job with Network of International Christian Schools. There is a school in East Asia that had a sixth grade opening. After much prayer I accepted on Sunday night…

My family is slightly leary of me going. They worry about my safety and loneliness, but I have prayed continually that if it is not God's will for me to go that he would slam the door shut. It looks like instead of closing the door, he has left it wide open. I've told some of my friends that while so many things about teaching in East Asia scare me to death, I feel like I would be disobedient if I decide to stay here instead of going where the Lord is sending me….
I think and pray for you and Dan often. I can't tell you how many times in the past few years I look back on my experience at Illinois State and am thankful that you called to do a follow up with me after I filled out a survey. There is no way I would even think to go to China without the foundation that I received from my time with Campus Crusade. I pray that you continue to have a strong impact on the lives of the college students you work with. They are so blessed to have you in Michigan…

Emily”

October 13-15 was our annual Fall Retreat. It was amazing! The keynote speaker was Kevin Butcher a local pastor here in Detroit. He is a gifted preacher. Here are some quotes from the students who were there. These quotes are from our website and so I didn’t edit them.

SO from this whole weekend. It just feels as f the fire is burning threw my whole body. I am just in comfort right now. I have not felt like this in a long time. Plus the people from this weekend that were helping me out. just simply being a brother or sister in christ. Just the way they loved on me and the way I was able to love on them. I never felt so comfortable around so many people. It was awesome. I never knew people could be so cool and loving. Thank you Jesus.

the fall retreat was amazing, (which is different from a hazing).

the speaker seemed to be describing the last 2 years of my life in many respects.

at first i was like, "wow, there's so not many people here i know, this sucks".

after running into a good friend i had no idea was going to be there in my own cabin and meeting tons of other new people, my mind was changed much.

i am encouraged.

i still don't know why i am where i am. i still don't know where i'm going. but we shall see
.

One highlight from the weekend occurred on Saturday night when Kevin opened the floor for people to share. One student, Mona, stood and began sharing about how the weekend had impacted her and then said that God had been impressing on her to share her story. Mona spent the next ten minutes sharing how as a freshman at the University of Detroit she was a devoted Muslim. Up until the time she went to college she had worn her head covering and was fully observant. She was dating a nominally Christian young man and anytime he brought up Jesus she would swear at him and curse the name of Jesus.

During her sophomore year, Mona’s R.A. was a woman named Martha (who is now on our staff team). Martha sat down and shared the Four Spiritual Laws with Mona. Mona wanted nothing to do with Jesus or with the Four Spiritual Laws. A year later Mona found the little booklet in her book bag and read it again. This time though she did not curse Jesus but trusted Him for the forgiveness of her sin. A few weeks later she saw Martha at a Gospel Choir Concert on campus and embraced her and thanked her for sharing Jesus with her! It has not been easy for Mona since trusting Christ. Her family does not understand or like her decision to follow Jesus. Many of her family will no longer even acknowledge her. Mona trusting in Jesus has cost her more than most of us can imagine. The amazing thing is that this is happening in Detroit, USA not Istanbul, Turkey or Tehran, Iran.

In closing, I wanted to ask you to pray for a few things. Please pray that the Lord would continue to make in roads on the campuses of Detroit. He is at work and it is fun to be a part of it all! However, we long for an even deeper and wider outbreak in response to the gospel. Please pray for our student leaders as they continue to deal with the complexities of leading and being students. Please pray for us as we continue to trust the Lord for our support.

God is at work in the lives of students. Your partnership with us is helping to bring spiritual renewal to Metro Detroit and beyond. Thank you so much!

This Week...

<DIV style="margin-top: 0px; It is hard to believe that the summer has gone and September is here. The last few months have been very full. Our family went to Indianapolis where Amy and I led the Crossroads Summer Project. During the summer I officiated my little brother’s wedding. Ethan and Libby were the ring-bearer and flower girl. This might be prideful, but, those little kids looked like a warrior prince and a beautiful princess that day! We also said goodbye to my Grandma Bev, who went to be with the Lord the following weekend. It was a whirlwind week with tons of emotions. Needless to say we were fighting to keep our heads above water at times this summer.

Crossroads Summer Project was an adventure! We were able to stay in the home of some friends who were overseas. The adventurous part was taking care of their dog, four fish, and one-acre lawn with a push mower! One of the best parts of the summer was Amy’s opportunity to play a role in the lives of two student women. She met with them each week and led their Bible study. It was fun for me to see Amy in action again and to be back in the midst of ministry together. This summer also provided an outlet for me to lead a team again. Last year was difficult as I realized how much I missed shepherding a staff team and ministry. Crossroads gave me the opportunity to do just that and I am grateful to the Lord for the opportunity.

In the midst of the summer Amy and I were struck again by the blessing that it is to be on staff with Campus Crusade for Christ. This came in the most unlikely of places: Ethan’s fifth birthday party. As we left Detroit for the summer I was saddened by the fact that Ethan would not be able to play ball this summer and have a “normal” summer. Those sentiments changed on July 14th. That day we saw staff friends, students, and family come together and invest in our son’s life by being at his party and playing a five-inning baseball game. I cannot communicate to you how deeply that marked Amy and I. What an amazing testimony of the grace of God to our family.

Upon returning to Detroit we knew that there was much to do this fall. However, I do not think that we are really prepared for all that we are about to face. As staff meetings kicked off the reality that we had lost four staff from our team hit us like a ton of bricks. We are trusting God for big things this fall on our campuses. We are kicking off strong the first week of September by bringing in a band called Chasing Elvis. They will be playing all over the metro area to help us connect with freshmen. Freshmen are the single most important people group on campus. If we can reach the freshmen class every year we will have reached the campus in four years! How amazing would that be to see over 200,000 students saturated with the message of Jesus? Freshmen are what get me out of bed in the morning after being up late from hanging with students.
Beyond ministry I am also taking two more seminary classes this fall, Greek and Spiritual Formation. I am looking forward to Greek. During class our professor reassured us that his class has made grown men weep! However, by the end of the first class, all of us were able to actually read Greek. But, did we have any idea what we were saying? Not a chance! Spiritual Formation is a class where we will develop a theology of what it means to be conformed to the likeness of Jesus. Specifically, we will be experiencing some of the classical spiritual disciplines like fasting and solitude. It seems like this will be a refreshing time in the midst of the chaos of ministry and Greek! I realized again this fall how much I hunger and thirst for learning. I can not tell you how excited I am to be in seminary and have the opportunity to grow deeper in my relationship with the Lord through the in depth study of his word and the community of believers!

Amy and I are so grateful for you. I do not think there is enough paper or hard drive space to tell you how thankful we are for your love, friendship, support, and prayers. Because we know that you are praying for us we wanted to pass on a couple of requests to you. Please pray for ministry this fall. Pray specifically for Lawrence Technological University, University of Detroit-Mercy, Schoolcraft College, and University of Michigan-Dearborn. LTU and UDM have established movements and we are trusting God to bring about explosive growth. Schoolcraft and U of M-Dearborn do not have a movement on campus and we need to see the Lord do something radical there. Please pray for our financial support. We are currently short $2,000 in monthly support that we need. Pray for Amy and I as we enter into the whole seminary thing together again this fall. We are both nervous about me taking Greek and the workload that it will demand.

Thanks so much for your faithful prayer and support! Amy, Ethan, Libby, and I are so grateful for all you do on our behalf.

Erik Steffen

Many of you who read our most recent newsletter have been praying for Erik and Kelly Steffen. This past Saturday Erik went home to be with the Lord. His memorial service will be published on the web soon. Erik was an amazing guy who Amy and I met in 1996 in Ocean City, we were students on summer project and Erik was staffing it. It was a sad day yesterday as we went to the memorial. On the other hand we are joyful knowing that he is with Jesus.

Please pray for Kelly and their two little boys Alex (3) and Jensen (1). Regardless of where we are on our spiritual journeys, we believe that when we help those in need, we are actually expressing the reality of Jesus to people. This has always been our goal, on the university campus or elsewhere, and we trust and pray that we did this to the best of our ability. We witnessed a real world catastrophe, but we responded with real work, thereby showing the Gulf Coast residents a real hope.

In our damaged world, hurricanes can devastate lives and cities. In all, the hurricane affected 90,000 square miles, causing billions in property damages and displacing hundreds of thousands. Moreover, there were human tragedies that cannot be quantified – such as the loss of friends, family members and loved ones. This is the real world in which we live. This year, we needed to respond with real work. Let me share some conservative statistics regarding what we did together from September to April.

> Over 15,000 people volunteered, including 10,000 over spring break alone
> We prepared and distributed 250,000 meals
> We removed debris from well over 4,000 homes, schools and churches
> We cleaned 2,000 yards

Not only were we able to serve the Gulf Coast with real work, we were able to give its residents real hope as well. For example Kim, a New Orleans resident who lost her home to Katrina told us, “As bad as Katrina was, this is how good it is to make you feel like, yes, we still have Americans that love and care, complete strangers and step up to the plate and help.” The Reverend Leonard Lucas, a Lower 9th Ward pastor, told us, “just you being here (in the 9th Ward) told these people that they were not forgotten, gave them a hope for a new beginning and strengthened their faith for the future.” We are humbled that our efforts have made that kind of impact.

May 2006 Newsletter

May 19, 2006

Last week, as Amy and I were relaxing and watching “The Apprentice”, I was struck by something that was said. This particular episode had the wannabe Trumps at Rutgers University. They were there to peddle Outback steaks and blooming onions by throwing a tailgate party. The two teams were running all over the place pumping up their parties and hoping that tons of students would come to drink beer and eat steaks on the cheap.
The men, who had a raging party going with the cheerleaders and dance team, lost big time. In the boardroom, “The Donald”, made this remark: “All college students want to do is drink and have sex.” Everyone laughed and then he proceeded to fire one of the poor chaps sitting in front of him. This statement has been simmering for a couple of days now. Is that true? Do college students just want to drink and have sex? This does seem to be the prevailing opinion in our culture, but is it true?

Amy and I have been intimately involved on the college campus since 1994 when we were students until now as staff with Campus Crusade. This is not the reality that we come face to face with everyday. Do students like to party? Yes. Do they drink beer? Yes. Do they have sex? Yes. This is not all they want to do though. In the last few years a transformation has begun, college students both Christian and non-Christian are more aware of their place in a larger global community. Students are serving selflessly all over the world. It is just as likely for a student to attend an “alternative” spring break as go to South Padre Island to party. For example, more than 8,000 students from around the US participated with Hurricane Katrina relief over four weeks during their spring breaks.

This low opinion of college students is not simply found in the general culture but it is also found in our churches. We do not know what to do with these students. In most people’s eyes they are not adults and yet obviously not children either. So what do we do? I was talking with a friend recently who was reading a book about the military. He was saying how it is amazing that the military is willing to trust a 19-20 year old with multi-million dollar equipment (jets, tanks, ships, bombs) and yet the church culture will not trust a student with leading a Bible study.

College students are the powerful percent. They are among the world’s elite who will one day lead our governments and drive our culture. They will be the Pastors, Elders, and Deacons of our churches. College students are not just about drinking and having sex. College students are searching. They are searching for a place to fit. They are searching for stability and they want to know if there is more out there than what they see. Please, hear us, college students are amazing. They have so much potential. More than ever the college campus may be the most significant mission field in the world. Thank you so much for your faithful investment in us and this key mission field.

Amy and the kids are doing great! Ethan is struggling through allergies and Libby is as precocious and beautiful as ever. We are finally settling in to our home. We realized that we never really did that this fall. I wrapped up my seminary classes this semester and I am looking forward to Greek in the Fall. Please pray for our financial support. Please pray for this summer as we lead a summer project in Indianapolis. Finally pray for our friends Erik and Kelly Steffen. They have two little boys and Erik is suffering through terminal cancer. We have been all over the place with Spring Break and visiting family. Our whole family has been sick with some sort of cold (thankfully that seems to be over). My brother, David, came into town for about ten days earlier this month from Salt Lake City, UT. It was great to have him here! Ethan and Libby are doing really well. Libby has finally decided to talk now. It’s amazing to listen to the conversations that Ethan and Libby have together. They definitely keep us laughing! Ethan is still a little firecracker. He and Amy were working on catechism questions and she asked him, “How did God write the Bible?” After thinking this over for a moment Ethan responded, “With a pencil!” Pretty great!

Over spring break I took 32 students from Central Michigan University and the University of Detroit-Mercy to New Orleans, LA. Leading up to the trip I had no desire to go. My heart was hard and I had little to no compassion for the city or the people there. Sure, I felt bad about what happened to them but I did not want to go and help with the rebuilding. About ninety miles outside of the city all of that changed. The trees alongside the expressway were all down and there was trash all over the place. As we continued toward the city on the side of the road was a dead dog and two dead cats. All of them looked bloated as if they had been underwater for a long time. Then I saw in the median of the expressway a baby crib. My heart broke. These were real people and real families. I was overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the devastation.

As we continued into the city it was like driving into a nightmare. The place was a ghost town. There were abandoned cars and wrecked houses. All of them had the tell tale marks of a water line. When we arrived into New Orleans our living location changed twice because FEMA pulled our housing last minute (they pulled it on Thursday, 1500 students arrived on Friday!). The first night we stayed in an abandoned hotel where we had to clean our rooms with mold killer and bleach before we could even move in. The next day we packed our vehicles again and headed to Slidell, LA to work alongside of Operation Blessing (a Christian Disaster Relief Organization). We stayed there for the week and worked under them.

The homes that we worked on had been completely submerged by the hurricane. Actually, that’s true. They were submerged in water after the levies broke TWO days after the hurricane! We were working in one of the poorer areas called, St. Bernard’s Parish. As we drove into the parish everyday it was as if September 1 never ended. All the businesses were destroyed and their signs were unchanged from that horrific day. One morning as we drove into work there was a line of cars that stretched for a couple of miles. These people were all waiting to get food from a pantry. Our two work crews of students were able to gut four homes and prepare them for contractors to come in and rebuild.

This week challenged many of my assumptions about the character of God and who he is. The worst hit parts of the city were where the poor lived. These people had no insurance and have no means to rebuild. One man whom we talked to asked us to go back home and tell the story of what we saw. He said, “America has a short memory. Six months ago a hurricane destroyed our city. Nobody talks about it on TV anymore. To most of America this never happened. Please tell people about this and tell them to come help.”

If this city is going to be rebuilt the Church will have to do it. The government has passed out its money and trailers; they have nothing left to offer. The only way for these people to find hope and mercy is for us to go and bring it to them. I pray that the church will keep on going until the city is restored. These people need us and we need to show them that the church of the living God cares and so does He!
<img width='1' height='1' It has been a couple of months since our last update and the reason is this: life has been absolutely insane! Since the last time we wrote you the Lord sold our house in Illinois and provided a new home in Canton, MI. We have begun stepping into ministry in the Metro Detroit area and trying to adjust to a new culture and a new team.

Our home is a cute little ranch in one of the Metro Detroit suburbs. We are no more than a thirty-minute drive to just about anywhere in the city. Canton also has a great parks and recreation department, so there are many things for the kids to do. Our neighborhood really feels like a neighborhood and the people are so friendly! We have been up to our necks in paint trying to make this house our own. The highlight so far of the painting process has been Ethan painting his closet red!

The team in Metro Detroit is a lot of fun. There are ten of us. Four married couples and two single women. One couple has two daughters and another is pregnant with their first child. We are enjoying being on a large team but we are also struggling through the transition of being a part of the team and not leading the team. The Lord has shown me how much pride, arrogance, and selfishness resides inside my heart. Isn’t it amazing how God can use so many things to teach us the same lessons over and over again!

Amy and the kids are well. Ethan deeply misses his “Illinois friends”. Amy and I miss our church family from Normal more deeply than I think we realized we would. I distinctly remember the two of us longing to be closer to family when we first moved to Illinois and now that we are close to “family”, we long to be close to our family again. Six years in one place makes for some very, very, deep roots. We appreciate all of your prayers as we continue to mourn moving away from Normal and yet experience the joy and excitement of where God is leading us in Detroit.

The highlight of ministry so far has been being able to speak at the weekly meetings in Detroit. I am in the midst of teaching through a four-week series at the University of Detroit-Mercy. I am unpacking our team’s vision for the city. The vision statement is, “…trusting God for relevant communities of students inviting students to experience Jesus…” It has been fun to see the students’ response to the Word of God and how they move out in faith as they are compelled by the love of our Savior. I have already done the series at Lawrence Technological University and Oakland University. If you are in the area I would love to see you come out to a weekly meeting to get a taste of what God is doing in Detroit and to be able to see you. Just give me a call and I will give you the details!

Please pray for us as we continue to make decisions about our home and what needs to be done when. Pray that God would continue to knit our hearts together with our new staff team and students. Pray for our support, as we need to raise another $1ooo in monthly support to bring us up to full support.

Thank you so much for all you do and how you minister to us through your gracious prayers and support!

--
In Christ,
Dan Rose
Detroit CRU
Campus Crusade for Christ
dan.rose@uscm.org
309.531.4291 (cell)
http://www.detroitcru.com
http://give.ccci.org/give/0485800

August 2005

Since we last wrote you we have driven over 2800 miles roundtrip and have had some great adventures as a family. In the midst of all that God has been challenging us and bringing us before him to pray and trust like never before. He continues to provide in marvelous ways for all of our needs and desires. Our family is so grateful to be home and sleeping in our own beds. I think that our mini-van might be the most grateful that we are done propelling it up and down mountains and are now back to the flat lands of Central Illinois.
Yes, I said Central Illinois. Our home has yet to sell. It has been on the market now for six months and we are getting very anxious. We are constantly reminded that God’s will is never thwarted and that his decrees have been set since the foundation of the world. His providence is good and perfect and in the end he is going to bring about his greatest glory so that we will worship him in greater spirit and truth. That being said, Amy and I are struggling to believe. We are trusting that the objective truth we believe in our heads will continue to the very long trip down to our hearts and become subjective reality. Please pray for us. Ethan prays everyday for our home to sell. He prays with passion and zeal, that is so much fun for us to hear. He has not doubted once and firmly believes that he will get a new house soon that he can paint!
Our trip to National Staff Conference in Fort Collins, CO was a great time. The first few days were dedicated to spending time with the Campus Ministry. This year the keynote speaker was John Piper. What an amazing and refreshing time that was for Amy and me. Dr. Piper’s messages really hit us deeply and we were challenged greatly from the Scriptures. Ethan and Libby attended “Kid’s Camp”. Ethan loved every minute of it. He made some great friends and was sad when the last day came. Libby, well, let’s say she became somewhat famous for her ability to yell. She didn’t exactly like the Kid’s Camp initially but by the end she was having a great time too.
Our time in Colorado was highlighted by a family day to Rocky Mountain National Park. We drove up the Trail Ridge Road and then climbed a short way to the peak, which was just over 2 miles above sea level! Amazing! From there you are able to truly appreciate the majesty and magnificence of our God. The funniest part of the trip actually happened after we left the mountains. While there we bumped into a herd of elk. Libby discovered that she could say “elk” and from that point on every animal was an “elk”. Now imagine driving through Nebraska where there are more cows than people and hearing every few minutes, “Elk! Elk! Elk!” Yes, that was our trip home! Too much fun!
Clearly though the highlight of our time out west was visiting my brother and sister-in-law in Salt Lake City, UT. It was a refreshing and relaxing time. Dave and Sarah took great care of us. The first day I came down with the flu but after that it was smooth sailing. The kids loved going to a park that had fountains for them to run to and Uncle Dave took Ethan for a ride on the Tram (of course we referred to it as the train!). It was a great few days and we miss Dave and Sarah already.
Thank you so much for your faithful support, prayers, and friendship. Please know how grateful Amy and I are for you. Please pray for our home to sell quickly, for our transition to the Detroit Metro Team, and for our financial support (it is quite a bit more costly to live in Detroit than in Normal). Thank you again and hopefully we will see you or hear from you soon.

--
In Christ,
Dan Rose
Detroit CRU
Campus Crusade for Christ
dan.rose@uscm.org
309.531.4291 (cell)
http://www.detroitcru.com
http://give.ccci.org/give/0485800

June 2005

Hello! Can you believe that we are moving into June already? The schools in Normal have finished up. The baseball fields seem to be packed all the time and Ethan and Libby have discovered the joy of running between the wading pool and sandbox! Amy has come to the realization that the bathtub will get a good work out this summer! The excitement this month has come in the form of injuries! I have begun playing racquetball with the youth pastor and one day when I was on the verge of finally beating him, he beaned me in the eye! Now, I am not saying it was on purpose but I will let you draw your own conclusion! The other injury took place during a church basketball game when I came down the court and rolled my ankle. It made the coolest crunching sound ever and then inflated and turned purple! It has been an exciting month!

This month I wanted to give you some perspective on the role, you play in reaching college students with the gospel of Christ. The mission of Campus Crusade for Christ is very simple: We are trusting God to turn lost students into Christ-centered laborers. This mission statement is really a threefold vision. First, we are trusting God to win students to himself through the proclamation of the gospel through any means possible. Secondly, we are trusting God to build students in their faith. We desire to see every student become a mature believer who is running hard after his or her savior! Finally, we are trusting God to send every student into His harvest field. This means that we want every student to understand that when they step into the world they are Christ’s ambassadors wherever they are. They carry with them the message of reconciliation and it is their responsibility to implore those people in their sphere of influence to be reconciled to God.

Amy and I are committed to this mission because of what we see in the Bible. We find the specific command in Matthew 28:18-20. This is commonly referred to as the Great Commission. Jesus is about to ascend to heaven and in his final words; he commissions the disciples to “go into all the world” and to “make disciples of every nation”. We are all under this commission: all of us without exception. Some of us choose to live this out in the marketplace and some in full time Christian work. Either way we are all missionaries and all of us have a role to play.

As a member of our team, you play a very specific role to help reach a very specific group of people. Through your role as a ministry team partner, you provide the critical mass for Amy and I to go. I sat in on the ordination of a pastor not too long ago. During his “trial”, the presbytery asked the church if they were going to provide this pastor with enough money to “free him from worldly concerns”. The presbytery wanted to make sure that this particular local church was providing for their future shepherd. This is the role that you play in our lives. Your generous and loving gifts free Amy and I to go and boldly proclaim the gospel on the college campus. Through us, you are truly reaching college students with the gospel. In a sense, we are not only ambassadors for Christ but we are ambassadors for you as well.

I desperately want you to know how important you are to the cause of Christ. Politics and education will not change the world. However, those things are important. It is through the advancement of the kingdom of God in every people group that the world is changed. You are helping to make that possible through us. Amy and I love you and are more grateful than you will ever know. Thank you for bringing great glory to God through your faithful prayer, finances, involvement, and expertise.

A New Way to Give...

To the right is a link if you want to give to our ministry via the web....

Injury...

Here is a link to some pictures of me getting hurt! It’s May and the weather has finally turned in Central Illinois! I thought that in May it was supposed to be warm weather, baseball, and the NHL playoffs. Two out of three isn’t bad right? That would get a ball player into the Hall of Fame! The lack of a Red Wings playoff run aside, we are experiencing the goodness of God in our lives. He continues to challenge and bless us. We wrestle daily to trust him with the sale of our home. We struggle to believe him for the financial support that we need. Yet, we see in his word that he is always faithful and that he will always take care of and bless his children. So, here we are at the end of a chapter in the story that God is writing and waiting to see how he will finish and begin the next. We are grateful for your consistent prayers and support. Thank you!

The past month has been crazy busy with me returning full time to campus. The top priority over the last few weeks has been to transition leadership of the team to Ken Lang and Laurie Soliday. They have both been our team here for the last three years. I am thankful that the Lord has raised them up to lead. The first weekend of April we had our Men’s Charge (because men charge not retreat!) and it was an amazing time. There were around 30 men who attended the weekend. I taught from Ephesians on biblical manhood and what it means to be adopted as a son and to have an inheritance in the kingdom of heaven. The weekend also included things like “pain pong”, “sock hockey”, “silent football”, and “the gauntlet”. Unfortunately space prohibits me from describing these in detail. Let’s just say that if you are a fan of Fear Factor then you would probably love the weekend!

In April Amy went away for three days for Campus Crusade for Christ’s wives conference. She had a great time and was encouraged. It was however very heavy because there has been much tragedy in the lives of the staff in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. The next week I was off to a four day Local Leaders conference. During this time, I officially handed over leadership to Ken and Laurie and saw them connect with their new peers. I also had the chance to sit down with a couple of staff from our new team in Detroit. It looks like I will be focusing my energy at University of Detroit-Mercy, Schoolcraft College, and Madonna University. I will also be working to develop church partnerships throughout the city.

Ethan and Libby are doing well. Libby is really beginning to find her voice and is running full steam ahead. Her favorite thing to do right now is to climb on Ethan and pat on his head. She affectionately refers to him as “Bubba”. It is impressive to see that she stands up for herself and even gives Ethan a little of his own medicine now! Ethan has informed us that he is no longer Ethan but he is Spiderman. He will not be Ethan again until he gets to heaven! Too funny! The good news is that we were able to convince him to be Ethan for church on Sunday. He has taken a big step at church. He now comes up to “big church” with us and then goes down to children’s church just before the sermon. It is amazing to watch him grow up!

Thank you again for investing in what God is doing throughout the world in the lives of college students. We are thankful for you and know that we pray for you and appreciate all that you do!

April 2005

Hello! It is hard to believe that March is ending. We are finishing our eighth week of Ministry Partner Development and will return to campus on April 1. God has been very faithful over the last eight weeks, as we have seen him raise almost $600 in new monthly support. This leaves us with about $1500 left to raise. We trust that over the next few months we will see that come in too. Thank you so much for all your prayers as we continue to trust God with our financial support. You play a big part in how he provides for our every need. Thank you!

One of the most exciting things that God has been doing in our hearts through this process is to cement our calling to Detroit. As I continue to meet with people and cast vision for the ministry there the more excited I get. Amy and I believe that God is going to do great things in us and through us as we step out in faith and trust him. There is a Caedmon’s Call song that has been hitting me recently as being very pertinent. It is a song called “Faith My Eyes” off the 40 Acres album. There is a line in the chorus that says, “And I’ll walk with grace my feet and faith my eyes.” Amy and I feel as though that really is our motto these days.

As we have been off campus the ministry in Central Illinois continues rolling along without a hitch. The last week of March is one that we would have liked to be more involved with. There are four Campus Crusade for Christ STINTers from Freiburg, Germany in Bloomington-Normal with a group of nine German college students. They are at the end of a Great Lakes tour where they visited Indiana University, Purdue University, and now Illinois Catalytic. We are the three campuses that are in partnership with the university in Freiburg. While in Bloomington Normal the Germans are spending time learning the ins and outs of catalytic ministry. They are spending time with some of our key leaders and even doing evangelism on campus! Could you imagine being an American college student and having a German college student come up and share the gospel? Amazing!

Ethan and Libby are doing well. They are enjoying the warmer weather. Ethan has been waiting for the spring for a very long time! He is taking full advantage of being able to play baseball in the backyard! It has been a lot of fun for us too! The only problem is that Ethan hits the ball over the fence every couple of at bats; so, Mom and Dad are out chasing baseballs across the street! I guess we probably do need the exercise.

Thank you again for being a part of our team and all that God is doing in the lives of college students in Central Illinois. You are an incredible blessing and a beautiful picture of God’s never ending faithfulness.

March 2005 Newsletter

Hello! As I look out the window in my little basement office the snow is blowing and not sticking. Amy and I just returned from a trip up to the Detroit area where we met with supporters and did a little house hunting. Spending time with our dear partners in ministry there was incredible! You encouraged our hearts. Thanks! Our house hunting was frustrating. We spent an afternoon driving around Livonia, MI. There simply was not much that we liked. However, it has helped in narrowing down places we do not want to live! We also visited a church in Farmington Hills, MI. Through all of this Amy and I are being forced to embrace the sadness of leaving the home we have built over the last six years in Normal. Please pray for us as we go through this process of leaving. In spite of the grieving that we went through, we also experienced some of the joy that awaits us when we head to the area, specifically having grandparents close by! Ethan and Libby had a ball with their Mimi, Grandpa and Grandma Rose.

We were able to spend one evening with the staff and students of Detroit. Amy, Ethan, and I went to the monthly “Metro” meeting. It was an evening of prayer, praise, and sharing. We were able to hear from a number of the students about what God is doing on their campuses in Detroit. There was one student in particular that stuck out to me. He is a student at the University of Michigan in Dearborn. He shared about how many Muslim students are on his campus and asked for the students at the meeting to pray that God would raise up leaders to share the gospel with these Muslim students. The thing that was so beautiful was that based on his accent it was clear that this student was not from the U.S.! It is amazing to hear students from around the world coming to the U.S. and being used by God to reach the campuses here.

Things in Central Illinois are also rolling along without a hitch. Amy and I left campus on February 1 and will be off until April 1, while we raise support. A couple of weeks ago the students at Illinois State University had evangelism training. This was a training totally led by students and it was done through their own initiative. Seventy-five students were present for the training! There were 68 students being trained and about 7 who led the time. God is so gracious! I remember the day when we were overjoyed by a turn out of 30 to a training time. God is at work in the lives of students through out Illinois!

The kids are doing well. Ethan is figuring out this whole move thing and is more than a little sad that Laurie (a woman on our staff team) who is his regular babysitter is not coming with us to Michigan. However, the whole week we were in Michigan it snowed everyday! Ethan loved it! Libby is cute and fun. She is finding her voice and her attitude. She climbs on everything and is going to make her poor father go gray before his time!

Over the last month we continue to see God’s goodness, sovereignty, and faithfulness played out in our lives. We are falling more in love with him all the time and are learning over and over what it means to live by Hebrews 11:1, “Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.” Please pray for our transition. Please pray for our home to sell too. Please pray for God to provide the financial support we need to live in Detroit. Finally, thank you so much for your continued love, friendship, and partnership with us in ministry!

Another Visitor

Last night we got a phone call at 7 pm about 10 minutes after Libby went to bed.
